The domain and the brand
The publication name, the domain and the brand need to match. Changing the domain once it is chosen puts your accumulated search visibility at risk.
The technical setup takes a day; legal compliance lasts a lifetime. This page gathers the founding of a news site under two headings: what is installed on the software and infrastructure side, and which legal duty stays with whom. In the KEYDAL setup service the whole of the first heading is ours, while under the second you get ready fields and reminders.
The nine headings below are decided once during founding but are hard to change later. We take them in order.
The publication name, the domain and the brand need to match. Changing the domain once it is chosen puts your accumulated search visibility at risk.
If you are going to publish as an internet news site, a declaration is filed. The responsible manager shown in it is the point of contact for every later process.
The trade name, business address, e-mail, telephone, electronic notification address and hosting provider must be reachable from the home page.
Intellectual workers are employed on contracts complying with Law No. 5953. If you are aiming for official announcements, the minimum staff number is set by category.
Published content must be retained with its accuracy and integrity preserved. That is a technical duty and is solved by the infrastructure.
Traffic on a news site spikes suddenly. The server and cache setup is planned from the start so that a story hitting the lead does not bring the site down.
The Google News feed, the sitemap and structured data are configured at setup; adding them later costs time.
If you are thinking of receiving official announcements, the waiting period runs from day one. The staff, content and traffic conditions should be set up from the start.
Daily backups, version history and attack protection are defined at founding. A backup added later will not bring back content already lost.
In the KEYDAL setup service, the table below says plainly which step is ours and which is yours.
| Step | What happens | Whose job | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The domain | The domain is chosen and registered, and the DNS records are prepared. | KEYDAL | The same day |
| 2. The server | The package is set according to expected traffic, and the server and SSL are installed. | KEYDAL | The same day |
| 3. The software | The news panel is installed, and categories, user roles and permissions are defined. | KEYDAL | 1 day |
| 4. Design | The theme is chosen, and the logo, colours and lead layout are set to the corporate identity. | KEYDAL | 1 day |
| 5. The masthead | The masthead fields are filled in, and the publisher confirms that the information is correct. | Together | Half a day |
| 6. The declaration | The declaration is prepared and filed with the competent authority, showing the responsible manager. | The publisher | Variable |
| 7. The staff | The intellectual worker contracts are made and the social security notifications are filed. | The publisher | Variable |
| 8. Feeds | The Google News feed, the sitemap and structured data are set up. | KEYDAL | Half a day |
| 9. Training | Panel training is given, and news entry and lead management are worked through with the team. | KEYDAL | Half a day |
| 10. Go live | The DNS is switched, the site goes live and the first stories are entered. | Together | The same day |
Both of these can be changed later, but there is a price. Getting them right at the start is the cheapest route.
The domain. When the publication name and the domain match, your site comes first on brand searches. It matters that the name is short and readable, and that it can be written down when spoken aloud. For a news site publishing in Turkey, .com.tr and .com are the most common choices, and taking both and redirecting one to the other is a common and sound practice. We covered choosing and registering a domain in the domain guide .
Hosting. The load profile of a news site is nothing like an ordinary corporate site. Traffic that runs low for most of the day can rise tenfold within minutes on the back of one story. So the measure is not average traffic but peak traffic. Shared hosting can be enough for small local sites; once daily visitors pass a certain threshold, a virtual server or managed infrastructure is needed.
In the KEYDAL news software packages, hosting is included in the price and is configured for peak traffic: full-page caching, image conversion and the distribution layer are switched on at setup. You do not need to buy hosting separately. If you are looking only for infrastructure, see the web hosting and servers pages.
The items below are configured at every setup regardless of package. None of them is sold afterwards as an “add-on module”.
| Item | What is done at setup | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| SSL certificate | An auto-renewing certificate is installed and all traffic is redirected to HTTPS. | An unencrypted connection costs both trust and ranking. |
| The URL structure | Category and story URLs are set permanently and Turkish characters are transliterated. | A URL structure changed later causes a temporary loss of ranking. |
| The sitemap | A general sitemap and a news sitemap are produced separately and updated automatically. | The news sitemap gets the last two days’ content crawled quickly. |
| Structured data | The NewsArticle, Organization and BreadcrumbList schemas are embedded in the pages. | It lets the author, date and section show in the search result. |
| Image processing | Uploaded images are converted to WebP and AVIF versions and their sizes are generated. | Unprocessed agency images slow the page down from the first month. |
| Cache | Full-page caching and the distribution layer are switched on, and clear themselves when a story is updated. | It stops a story hitting the lead from bringing the site down. |
| Backups | A daily automatic backup is taken and content version history is kept. | It makes deleted or altered content recoverable. |
| The security layer | A firewall, rate limiting and two-step verification for the admin panel are defined. | A news site is a kind of site that gets targeted because of its content. |
| User roles | The reporter, editor, editor-in-chief and advertising roles are defined separately. | It makes it traceable who entered and who published which story. |
| Measurement | Analytics, the search console and the traffic report are connected to the panel. | Documenting the official announcement traffic condition rests on this measurement. |
Law No. 7418 brought internet news sites within the scope of Press Law No. 5187. Some of the duties are technical and are solved by the infrastructure; others are institutional and legal, and no software can discharge them on your behalf.
These items come ready in the panel as fields, archives and timestamps. Filling them in correctly is the publisher’s responsibility.
These are institutional and legal duties. We provide reminders and record fields in the panel; discharging them is for the publisher.
The right to publish official announcements is not a document you pick up one day after founding. The waiting period starts running from day one.
For internet news sites the waiting period is 24 months as a rule, with an exception bringing it down to 6 months for sites meeting twice the conditions, and a separate arrangement for quota places where no qualifying site exists. For that period to start running, the site must actually be publishing and must maintain the conditions; it is not counted retrospectively. We covered the detail in the article on the waiting period .
Three conditions run together throughout the waiting period: staffing, content and visitor traffic. The staff number varies by category, and the intellectual workers must meet the contract, wage and notification conditions. On the content side, a daily minimum number of stories and originality are required. On the traffic side there are unique visitor and page view thresholds, measured with a particular tool.
The most useful thing to do at the setup stage is to make those three conditions measurable. The panel keeps the daily content counter, the staff list and the traffic report together, and raises an alert when a threshold is breached. Most of the documents requested at an inspection will already have accumulated in the panel. We gathered all of the conditions in the guide to the right to publish official announcements .
More than half of new setups are in fact migrations. The most critical part of a migration is not the content but the URLs.
All of these can be fixed later, but the cost of fixing them is higher than the cost of doing them right at the start.
The price is not a single item. The four variables below determine the size of the quotation.
| Variable | What it affects | The question to ask at setup |
|---|---|---|
| Expected traffic | The server package, cache setup and distribution layer | How many daily visitors do you expect, and what is the peak? |
| Number of users | The package level and the role and permission setup | How many reporters, editors and advertising staff will use the panel? |
| Archive to be migrated | The migration time and the redirect work | How many stories are on the existing site, and will the URL structure be kept? |
| Level of design | An off-the-shelf theme or a design bespoke to the corporate identity | Is an off-the-shelf theme enough, or do you want a bespoke design? |
For publications starting from scratch, the order and the owner of every step from the domain to preparing the declaration are clear.
For publications moving from WordPress or custom software, the archive, the URL structure and the position in search are preserved.
Because the waiting period runs from day one, the staffing, content and traffic conditions are made measurable at setup.
For organisations with a printed newspaper, the internet news site is built on top of the existing staff and content flow.
For the news units of associations, chambers, unions and public bodies, the separation of roles and the approval flow are defined from the start.
For sites publishing in a single field such as sport, economics or health, the category and tag structure is built to that field.
