PressStudio
PressStudio: the newspaper page design software we are developing for laying out printed newspapers.
PressStudio is a newspaper design application we are developing so that print newspapers can design their own pages. We are working on detailed design features.
What does it aim to solve?
In a printed newspaper, page design is redone every day and mostly consists of re-setting stories that have already been written on the digital side. PressStudio's aim is to reduce that repetition: story text, headlines and images should flow straight onto the page, leaving the designer with only the layout decisions. Column widths, typefaces and page templates should be defined once and reused in every issue, and the file that goes to press should be produced in the format the printer expects.
What stage is it at?
The project is in development and no release date has been announced yet. This page will be updated as the feature list becomes clear; publishers who print a newspaper and are interested can write to us. Feedback of this kind is the source we rely on most when deciding what to build first.
Relationship with KEYDAL News Software
PressStudio is a separate product; using KEYDAL News Software is not required. When the two are used together, however, the goal is that stories published on the digital side can be brought onto the printed page without an extra export step. Publishers who print a newspaper today and run their digital edition on KEYDAL are among the first candidate users of the project, and the list of needs they provide forms the basis of the design.
PressStudio is a software project aimed at the daily page design work of publishers who print a newspaper. Newspaper layout is still done largely with general-purpose desktop publishing programs; PressStudio aims to offer a workspace designed only for the newspaper page. Our goal is to bring the core layout tasks - column grids, headline and photo placement, flowing story text onto the page and print-ready output - into a single workflow.
The project is under development. Letting publishers who use KEYDAL News Software move between their digital news flow and the printed page without copy-and-paste is one of our priorities. This page will be updated as the feature list and release date become clear.
