You have decided to open a Minecraft server. But in which game mode? There are at least 10 different main game modes actively played today; each has its own player base, technical requirements and plugin pack. Choosing the wrong mode leaves you sitting on an empty server six months later. This guide compares the 10 main game modes in detail: popularity, complexity, number of required plugins, typical mistakes, monetisation model and who each one suits. By the end you will be able to pick the mode that matches your own profile.

1. Survival

The mode closest to Minecraft's native experience. Plugins are added on top of vanilla to provide commands, an economy and griefing protection.

Who is it for?

  • First-time server owners
  • Groups of 10-30 friends
  • People with no technical background
  • Low budget

Required plugins (25)

  • LuckPerms, Vault, PlaceholderAPI, ProtocolLib (core)
  • EssentialsX, EssentialsXChat
  • CoreProtect (griefing rollback)
  • Matrix AC (anti-cheat)
  • ProtectionStones or ResidencePlus (land claims)
  • ChestShop or QuickShop (shops)
  • mcMMO (skill system, optional)
  • DeluxeMenus (GUI)
  • TAB (scoreboard)
  • VoteParty (vote rewards)

Typical mistakes

  • Not bothering with the economy: money is not pointless in Survival — pay players for mob kills
  • Keeping spawn too small: a 40x40 block spawn traps players; go for 100x100 minimum
  • Skipping griefing protection: without a claim system the server is full of wrecked houses within two weeks
  • An oversized world: a 5000x5000 block world with no random teleport crushes new players

Monetisation model

There is no big money in Survival. VIP sales (flight, coloured chat) bring in 100-500 TRY a month. But if the community is large you can earn from advertising.

2. SkyBlock

The player starts on a small island and progresses by expanding resources, building an economy and upgrading the island. It offers a compelling progression system.

Who is it for?

  • Intermediate server owners
  • People who enjoy designing economies and progression systems
  • Anyone targeting a player base of 50+

Required plugins (45)

  • BentoBox + SkyBlock addon (island system)
  • BentoBox Challenges (quest system)
  • WildStacker (mob stacking, performance)
  • Minions or AutoFarm (automation)
  • ShopGUIPlus (shops)
  • AuctionHouse
  • VoteParty + VotingPlugin
  • IslandUpgrades
  • CoinFlipDuels (player-versus-player betting)
  • SuperCrates (reward crates)

Typical mistakes

  • Spawner pricing collapses: after two weeks 100 players own 1000 iron spawners
  • Island limits: if island size is under 75x75 the build space gets cramped
  • Mob stacker disabled: 50 players x 20 spawners x 100 mobs = TPS death
  • Unbalanced auction house: premium items sell out within minutes

Monetisation model

SkyBlock's strength is in-game sales. Rank packages (VIP, MVP), spawner sales, cosmetics, XP boosters — a large server earns 5,000-20,000 TRY a month.

3. OpSkyBlock

The fast-progression version of SkyBlock. Item drop rates are high, expensive blocks are cheap, island upgrades are quick. It targets a player base that wants adrenaline.

Who is it for?

  • Experienced server owners
  • Anyone targeting a competitive player base
  • People who can market actively

Required plugins (60)

Everything SkyBlock requires, plus:

  • StackMob: mob stacking for high drop rates
  • CustomItems / MMOItems: custom weapons and gear
  • SuperCrates + Seasonal Crates: seasonal reward system
  • PvPManager: PvP happens often on OpSkyBlock
  • Sponges: automatic XP, money and mob-kill events
  • BossBar: top-bar messages during events
  • Trails: particle trails behind players (cosmetic)

Typical mistakes

  • The economy does not survive a week: inflation explodes in a pack with 200%+ multipliers
  • No grief protection: OpSkyBlock players are more aggressive, island control has to be tight
  • Wrong event timing: 2-3 events a day is right; more is exhausting, fewer is boring

Monetisation model

High competition, high payouts. The pay-to-fast model (pay for faster progression) dominates. There are servers earning 10,000-50,000 TRY a month.

4. Faction

Group-based competition. Players form factions and fight other factions, build fortified bases and attack with TNT. Minecraft's most complex but most addictive mode.

Who is it for?

  • Highly experienced server owners
  • A competitive, hardcore player base
  • Owners with a high-performance server

Required plugins (75)

  • FactionsUUID or SavageFactions (faction core)
  • MassiveCore
  • CombatLogX (combat-log punishment)
  • Obsidian Destroyer / CrazyObsidian (breaking obsidian with TNT)
  • CannonsPvP (TNT cannon system)
  • KoTH (King of the Hill event)
  • Envoys (random reward drops)
  • SilkSpawners / EpicSpawners
  • SellChest
  • CustomEnchants

Typical mistakes

  • Wrong TNT cooldown: a single player can blow up the whole server
  • Unbalanced power system: one faction can bank 100+ power in three hours
  • Raid protection too strict: mid-size factions cannot fight at all
  • Undefined map borders: players walk 50,000 blocks out and get lost

Monetisation model

The economy of a Faction server is very complex. Ranks, kits, custom enchantments, TNT sales, envoy tickets. Monthly revenue can reach 15,000-100,000 TRY.

5. BedWars

Teams each defend a bed and win by breaking the other teams' beds. Fast, 10-15 minute matches. The classic minigame mode.

Who is it for?

  • PvP-focused server owners
  • People who like fast-paced play
  • Running communities that play in short sessions

Required plugins (45)

  • MBedwars (main BedWars plugin)
  • FastAsyncWorldEdit (map building)
  • SlimeWorldManager (map resets)
  • BungeeCord (splitting lobby and game)
  • PartyAndFriends
  • CombatTag+
  • DuelsX (1v1 in the lobby)
  • NametagEdit
  • Cosmetix (cosmetics)

Typical mistakes

  • Maps are never reset: after 50 games every map is a mess
  • No matchmaking: new players get mowed down immediately
  • No queue system: waiting in the lobby and never getting into a game
  • No team balancing: 4v1 games happen constantly

Monetisation model

Cosmetic sales dominate (kill messages, cages, shouts). Ranks come second. 3,000-15,000 TRY a month.

6. SkyWars

Every player starts on a small floating island, gears up on the middle island, and the last one standing wins. Similar to BedWars but solo-focused.

Required plugins (40)

  • SkyWarsReloaded
  • FastAsyncWorldEdit
  • SlimeWorldManager
  • BungeeCord
  • The rest is the same as BedWars (cosmetics, party, duels)

Typical mistakes

  • Broken chest refill balance: a player gets full diamond in two minutes
  • No bot kick protection: AFK bots farm kits
  • For Lucky SkyWars the balance sits between two extremes: either a very OP item or nothing at all

7. KitPvP

You enter an arena, pick a kit and fight everyone. The simplest mode. It can be launched on a low budget with little experience.

Required plugins (25)

  • SkyWarsReloaded or KitPvP
  • KitBattle
  • CombatTag+
  • Matrix AC (critical on KitPvP)
  • KillStreaks
  • NPC Quest Master

Typical mistakes

  • Weak anti-cheat: KitPvP turns into a hacker paradise
  • Broken kit balance: one kit cuts through all the others
  • Spawn killing: the spawn region has to be protected

8. Hub / Lobby

The main entry point. Players move to the other game-mode servers through this lobby. It is used together with a BungeeCord or Velocity proxy.

Required plugins (15)

  • LobbyManager
  • NPCs (Citizens + CustomNPC)
  • JumpPads
  • Parkour
  • BungeeCord
  • PartyAndFriends
  • ServerSelector
  • Cosmetix (gadgets, trails)

Typical mistakes

  • Broken NPC navigation: the player talks to an NPC but cannot be transferred to the other mode
  • Hub world far too large: it eats RAM even if you drop view distance to 6
  • No gadget spam control: five players at once turn the whole lobby into chaos

Monetisation model

The hub earns nothing on its own. Sales happen on the proxy and are marketed in sync with the other modes. Its real value: giving the player a good first experience when they join the hub, so they move on to the other modes.

9. RPG / MMORPG

Very far from vanilla. Quest systems, classes, levels, bosses, dungeons. The heaviest mode type, and the one that requires a team.

Required plugins (100+)

  • MMOCore + MMOItems (main RPG framework)
  • MythicMobs + ModelEngine
  • Quests or BetonQuest
  • mcMMO
  • Citizens + DenizenScript
  • RevivalWeapons
  • EliteMobs
  • Dungeons

Typical mistakes

  • Broken quest design: when a player finishes 50 quests in two hours the main story is lost
  • No class balance: the archer class shreds melee
  • Unbalanced bosses: a solo player cannot kill them, five players kill them instantly
  • No dungeon reset timer: once a dungeon is cleared there should be a five-minute wait

Monetisation model

Monetisation is complicated in RPG. You have to avoid the pay-to-win label; XP boosts, extra slots and cosmetics can still be sold. 10,000-30,000 TRY a month.

10. Creative

Players build, resources are unlimited. Mostly aimed at building communities.

Required plugins (12)

  • PlotSquared (plot system)
  • FastAsyncWorldEdit
  • WorldGuard
  • Citizens
  • GlobalChat
  • JoinMessages

Typical mistakes

  • No plot limit: one player claims 50 plots
  • No protection: players grief outside their plots
  • Flag settings: if mob spawning is on, a creative server turns into survival

Advice for First-Time Server Owners

If this is your first server project, start with Survival. Setup is simple, the player base is wide, and the technical knowledge you gain carries over when you move to other modes. After running Survival for 3-6 months you can add a second mode (SkyBlock, for example).

Never try to run Faction or MMORPG as your first server. Both have very high setup complexity, and the skill set they demand simply is not there in a junior server owner.

In Which Modes Are Plugin Packs Worth the Most?

The benefit of buying a ready-made plugin pack varies by mode:

ModeValue of a ready-made packWhy
SurvivalLow-MediumCan be built by hand, configuration is simple
SkyBlockHigh45+ plugins, economy balance — buying ready saves 100 hours
OpSkyBlockVery HighCustom items, events, economy model — 150+ hours
FactionVery HighThe most complex; a ready pack saves 200+ hours
BedWarsHighThe map + plugin combination calls for a professional pack
SkyWarsMediumMap creation matters, the plugin side is stable
KitPvPMediumKit balance is critical; a ready pack makes it easier
Hub / LobbyHighNPCs, gadgets, theme — a ready pack makes a big difference
RPG / MMORPGVery HighHundreds of hours of custom item and quest writing

Switching Game Modes

Changing the game mode after launching a server is possible but hard. It usually means setting up a new world plus a new plugin pack and offering the old world to existing players as an Archive. Starting with the right mode is the best option where possible.

The Truth About Multi-Mode Servers

What if we ran both SkyBlock and Faction on the same server? The plan sounds good in theory but is hard in practice. To go multi-mode:

  • You must set up a BungeeCord or Velocity proxy (two modes cannot run on one server)
  • You need a separate VPS per mode (4 GB+ RAM each)
  • A MySQL backend for a shared economy and ranks
  • You have to maintain at least two separate plugin packs
  • Marketing gets harder: does our server is both SkyBlock and Faction really give people clarity?

New servers generally start with one mode and add another as the community grows. Even Hypixel was minigames only for its first three years.

Resource List: Starting Specs by Mode

  • Survival start: 2 GB RAM, 15-20 plugins, capacity for 20 players
  • SkyBlock start: 4 GB RAM, 40-50 plugins, 40 players
  • OpSkyBlock start: 6 GB RAM, 55-65 plugins, 50-80 players
  • Faction start: 8 GB RAM, 70-85 plugins, 50 players
  • BedWars network: 4 GB hub + 4 GB game server, 40 plugins in total, 100 players
  • Hub: 2 GB RAM, 15 plugins, lobby capacity of 50

Advanced Variations of Each Mode

Every mode has more niche variations. These variations serve smaller audiences but create loyal players:

Survival variations

  • Hardcore: one death = ban. Brutal but addictive
  • Anarchy: no rules, anything goes. The 2b2t model
  • Semi-vanilla: minimal plugins, the core experience
  • Towny: a town/city system that brings large communities together
  • Economy Survival: more trade-focused, shop-dominant

SkyBlock variations

  • Grind SkyBlock: slow progression, balanced economy
  • Hypixel Skyblock clone: with MMORPG elements (hard to package)
  • Co-op SkyBlock: a shared island for 4-8 players
  • Roguelike SkyBlock: a fresh start with seasonal resets

Faction variations

  • Kingdoms: kingdom/profession roleplay plus faction competition
  • MC Wars: timeboxed faction games (one winner per match)
  • Solo Factions: individual power with no teams
  • 1.8 Legacy Faction: a fan community built around old PvP mechanics

Geography and Mode Preference: Turkey vs the World

The modes that are popular in Turkey differ from those popular worldwide. The gap is worth knowing:

ModeTurkeyWorldwide
FactionVery popular (#1)Moderately popular
OpSkyBlockPopular (#2)Not very popular
SurvivalPopular (#3)Very popular (#1)
BedWarsModerateVery popular (#2)
Standard SkyBlockLowPopular (#3)
RPG/MMORPGVery lowPopular
CreativeVery lowModerate

The Turkish market loves high adrenaline plus competition. Faction and OpSkyBlock dominate. Western markets are more varied — minigames and RPG are stronger there. If your audience is Turkish-only you will lean towards Faction/OpSkyBlock; if you run a multilingual server you can make a more balanced choice.

Marketing Strategy by Mode

A different marketing channel and message works for each mode:

  • Survival: long-form YouTube (let's plays), Discord communities, organic sharing
  • SkyBlock/OpSkyBlock: short-form TikTok, island tours, economy flex content
  • Faction: YouTube raid compilations, clan rivalry posts
  • BedWars/SkyWars: Twitch highlights, short kill compilations
  • KitPvP: Instagram Reels, Shorts — fast and easy to grasp
  • RPG/MMORPG: long blog posts, game-mechanic explainers

Anti-Cheat Requirements by Mode

Every mode has a different exposure to cheaters; pick your anti-cheat accordingly:

ModeAnti-Cheat PriorityRecommended

OpSkyBlockHighMatrix Premium
FactionVery highMatrix + Intave combination

Frequently Asked Questions

Can two modes run on the same server?

Technically yes — with a BungeeCord/Velocity proxy you can run two separate servers on different ports. But in practice that means managing two servers: twice the plugins, twice the configs, twice the maintenance. Not suitable for most small server owners.

If the mode I pick is not popular, will my server stay empty?

No. Niche modes create small but loyal audiences. In Turkey, for example, there are only about 20 active RPG servers, and most of them are full. Even at 10% of the wider market, a loyal community of 50 people is a good start. What matters is the quality of the mode and your marketing.

Can I change my mode later?

Possible but costly. The world is regenerated, the plugin pack changes, and player data sometimes cannot be transferred. Losing 50-70% of players during the switch is normal. It largely counts as starting over.

Multi-mode network or single mode?

Single mode for a new server owner. To run a network you need: (1) 10+ hours of sysadmin knowledge, (2) BungeeCord/Velocity, (3) at least 3-4 VPS instances, (4) a MySQL backend, (5) professional marketing. Beginners want to be Hypixel, but Hypixel only became Hypixel after 12 years. Focus on one mode in your first year.

I have picked my mode but choosing a plugin pack is hard — can I get help?

Yes. Pre-sales consultation from KEYDAL is free. Write in the sales channel on Discord and we will recommend a pack that fits your mode and budget. You can also see the pack in a test environment before you buy.

Mode-Specific Traps to Watch For

Every mode has its own traps. Go in knowing them:

  • In Survival: without griefing protection the server dies in two weeks. Set up the claim system on day one.
  • In SkyBlock: economy balance is everything. Review spawner prices weekly.
  • In Faction: uncontrolled TNT use ruins the server. Cooldowns and limits are mandatory.
  • In BedWars: without map rotation the game gets repetitive. Ship 8-10 maps minimum.
  • In a Hub: if the NPCs cannot send players to the backend servers, players leave.
  • In RPG: if quest balance is wrong, players show up for two days and never come back.

The Real Formula for a Successful Server

Mode choice matters, but it is not enough on its own. A successful server is the combination of these five elements:

  • The right mode choice (20%): a mode that fits your target audience
  • A quality plugin pack (25%): bug-free, optimised, calibrated
  • Reliable hosting (15%): uptime, low ping, DDoS protection
  • Active marketing (20%): Discord, YouTube, TikTok, Reddit
  • People management (20%): active moderators, community events, continuous improvement

You cannot build a large server without investing in all five. A perfect plugin pack plus no marketing = an empty server. Perfect marketing plus a buggy pack = churn.

Whichever mode you pick, remember that success takes patience. Hypixel did not become Hypixel overnight, and the big servers in any market were built over years of work. Start small, learn, improve, and grow together with your community.
