Even leading tools in the industry openly disclose in their reports that "the SEO analysis score does not directly affect your rankings." The score is a small health indicator; it is not a diagnosis.

Dozens of free SEO audit tools exist in the Turkish market — and worldwide. The typical scope of these tools includes between 23 and 100 distinct check points. The list below is a vendor-neutral breakdown of the audit criteria you'll commonly see across the industry.

  • Meta tag checks: title length (around 60 characters), meta description length (155-160 characters), meta keywords (irrelevant today but still inspected), Open Graph and Twitter Card presence.
  • Heading hierarchy: Whether the page has a single <h1>, and whether the h2-h3-h4 ordering is followed without skipping levels.
  • Image SEO: Share of images with populated alt and title attributes, file sizes, modern format usage (WebP/AVIF).
  • Link analysis: Internal link count, external link count, broken-link detection, nofollow usage ratio.
  • Technical foundation: Presence of robots.txt and its sitemap reference, XML sitemap accessibility, canonical tag presence, schema markup detection.

The first question is simple but critical: how many of your site's pages does Google know about? For the official answer, use the Pages report in Google Search Console; for a quick gut check, the site search operator works.

The site: operator does not return an exact count; it is Google's "approximate" estimate, and accuracy degrades as the page count grows. For the official number, look at the "Indexed" and "Not indexed" categories in the Indexing > Pages tab of Search Console.

Auditing via Google Search Console (GSC)

GSC is the only free tool that gives you Google's actual view of your site. You need to create a domain or URL prefix property and prove ownership with a DNS TXT record or an HTML file. Data starts accumulating within the first 3-7 days after verification.

  • URL Inspection: Shows the live status of a single page, the last crawl time, indexing blockers and the rendered HTML.
  • Pages report (formerly Coverage): Categorizes the site-wide indexed/not-indexed distribution and reasons ("crawled — currently not indexed", "discovered — currently not indexed", "alternate page with proper canonical", etc.).

  • Article / BlogPosting: For blog post pages. headline, datePublished, author and image are required fields.

  • FAQPage: Content with a frequently asked questions block. Google has restricted the visibility of this schema since 2023 but still supports it.
  • BreadcrumbList: On-site navigation breadcrumbs. Mobile SERPs show the category path in place of the URL.
  • VideoObject: Pages that contain video. thumbnailUrl, uploadDate and duration are required.
  • Recipe, Event, Course, JobPosting, HowTo: Niche types — only for the corresponding content type.

Hreflang and Multilingual SEO Auditing

On multilingual sites, hreflang tags done wrong leave Google unable to figure out which language should appear in which market. The brand blog runs TR/EN dual publishing as an example; whenever a TR article has an EN counterpart, both pages must carry rel="alternate" hreflang="..." tags in the head section.

Once the technical side is done, content auditing begins. The content audit answers three questions: which pages are losing traffic, how far off our target rank are we for which keywords, and is there thin content?

Keyword Gap Analysis

  • Pull your existing keywords from the GSC Performance report.
  • Identify competitors (3-5 main rivals are enough). List the topical content clusters they dominate.
  • Find keywords your competitors rank for but you don't, with at least 100 monthly searches.
  • For each gap, either produce new content or expand existing content.

For manual keyword gap analysis, Google Trends and the site: operator work for free. Professional teams use Ahrefs, Semrush, Mangools or open-source SerpAPI proxies. For teams without a budget, keywordtool.io and answerthepublic are entry-level alternatives.

Keyword Density and TF-IDF

Keyword density is a metric of the past; modern Google uses far more sophisticated semantic analysis. Even so, it gets checked during an audit: 1-3% is considered natural, 5%+ is treated as stuffing and can be penalized. TF-IDF (term frequency–inverse document frequency) measures, instead of one keyword, how often the words important for a domain or industry appear; modern content audit tools rely on this metric.

Rank Tracking: Querying Keyword Positions

The answer to "where do I rank for this keyword?" is not as straightforward as it sounds. Google personalizes results; the user's location, device, search history and session state all alter rankings. It is normal for the same user to see different positions for the same keyword in two different browsers.

  • Personal search: Open Google.com.tr in incognito and search — results still vary by location, but session influence diminishes.
  • Rank tracker services: They run queries server-side, providing location-based (city, region) and device-based (mobile/desktop) data.
  • Search Console Performance report: Google's official ranking data. Average position is a 28-day average — not the live rank.
  • SERP APIs: Services like SerpAPI, Oxylabs SERP and ScraperAPI provide programmatic querying. Pricing typically falls in the $50-500+ per month range.

Important warning: Hitting Google with curl and parsing the HTML is virtually impossible as of 2024-2026. Google's bot detection is extremely aggressive; CAPTCHA and IP blocks come fast. Rank checking must be done through official APIs or authorized SERP scraping services.

Pulling Positions via the Search Console API

The backlink profile is the backbone of off-page SEO. When Google evaluates who is linking to a page, it weighs quality, relevance and distribution together. A single backlink from a high-authority domain can be worth more than 100 low-quality links combined.

  • Total referring domains: 1 link from each of 100 different sources is more valuable than 100 links from one source.
  • Domain Authority / Domain Rating: Metrics like Moz DA, Ahrefs DR and Semrush AS — not Google's official metric, but a rough authority indicator.
  • Anchor text distribution: A natural profile contains varied anchor text. A majority of keyword-stuffed anchors like "istanbul home cleaning" signals manipulation.
  • Topical relevance: A link from a fashion blog to your hosting article is less valuable than a link from a hosting blog.
  • Toxic / spam link detection: Signals like PBNs, link farms and meaningless comment spam. Google's Disavow Tool lets you reject them.

For free backlink auditing, the Search Console > Links report gives you the subset Google sees; for full coverage you'd use Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz. As budget-free alternatives, OpenLinkProfiler and Seobility offer limited free analysis.

Crawler-Based Audits: Screaming Frog and Open-Source Alternatives

Online tools audit one page at a time; crawling the whole site requires a crawler. Screaming Frog SEO Spider is the industry standard (around 200 GBP/year) and crawls up to 500 URLs for free. Open-source alternatives include Sitebulb (paid but deep), Heritrix (Apache, web archive crawler), and your own Scrapy-based crawler.

Save the output as CSV/JSON and analyze it in Excel or pandas. Useful filters: empty titles, meta descriptions shorter than 50 or longer than 160 characters, h1 count not equal to 1, missing canonical, word count under 300 (thin content candidates).

Mobile SEO Auditing

Google has been applying mobile-first indexing since 2023. Your rankings are now determined by your mobile version, not your desktop version. Pages that aren't responsive or hide content on mobile lose ranking.

  • Viewport meta tag: <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> is mandatory. Missing this causes a serious drop in mobile ranking.
  • Tap targets ≥ 48×48 CSS px: Per Material Design guidelines. At least 8px gap between buttons.
  • No horizontal scroll: Sideways scrolling on mobile screens degrades page quality.

SEO Configuration at the Web Server Level

Content Quality Audit: Helpful Content and E-E-A-T

Since 2022, Google has been evaluating content quality directly through the Helpful Content System. The E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) concept is decisive especially on YMYL (Your Money Your Life — health, finance, legal, security) pages.

  • Experience: Does the author have actual experience with the subject? A "best coffee maker" piece written by someone who has never used one loses points.
  • Expertise: Is there real expertise on the topic? On technical topics, author bio, title, employer and certifications.
  • Authoritativeness: Are the brand or author authoritative on the subject? Backlink profile, industry citations, education/publishing history.

Auditing these criteria is manual and subjective. No tool offers an 'E-E-A-T score'. The work to do: build author bio pages, populate the author field in schema, enrich the about page with real information, publish customer reviews and case studies.

Google's official position: "AI-generated content does not violate the rules; but content produced solely for SEO that adds no user value — regardless of source — is penalized by the Helpful Content System."
