Domain registration data is publicly available

WHOIS is a publicly accessible protocol used to look up a domain name's registrant, registration date, expiry, nameservers and contact details. It is regulated by ICANN, and each TLD is managed by its own registry operator.

With a WHOIS query you can see whether a domain is taken, which registrar it was bought from, when it expires, and its authoritative DNS servers. Since 2018, personal registrations have personal data masked under WHOIS privacy (GDPR/privacy protection) — only registrar and technical fields remain visible.

About WHOIS lookups

Yes. The KEYDAL WHOIS lookup tool is completely free — no sign-up required. We query registry WHOIS servers directly, in real time.

The owner has enabled WHOIS privacy protection to mask personal data. It is legal and protected under GDPR for individual registrants. Corporate registrations typically show this information openly.

Enable WHOIS privacy (privacy protection) through your registrar. On domains registered with KEYDAL, this is included free of charge.

After expiry there is typically a 30-day grace period during which the owner can still renew. This is followed by a 30-day redemption period with higher fees. After that the domain drops and anyone can register it. Renew at least 30 days before expiry to be safe.

Query count depends on the TLD. .com and .net use a two-step lookup (Verisign first, then the registrar); other TLDs need a single step. To prevent abuse, the tool is rate-limited to around 20 requests per minute.
